Week 10 Practical Activity

The layout of my blog is rather clean and easy to read. It uses a great deal of white space, attracting attention to the words. The headings do not necessarily attract attention, but they do clearly label each entry.

I have completed all activities but Week 10 Technical activity, which I shall finish next.

I believe this assessment was easy to complete, but also easy to do wrong. Perhaps if the weekly tasks had been enforced, more effort would have been submitted into many blogs. After reviewing other blogs, I feel as if my work isn’t as great as everyone else’s, but I have also found a few which remain incomplete.

I feel a major difficulty with this assignment was motivation. I substituted it for panic, and for the past few weeks I’ve used a small laptop I have to write the activities’ answers. Unfortunately, it had neither USB ports nor internet access, so I couldn’t just copy everything into my blog after I’d finished tweaking everything. However, I’m finally done. Nearly.

Week 9 Practical Activity

I am reviewing Stephanie Christensen’s Storify story, found at https://storify.com/slc_90/24-hour-livin-hot-on-the-hill-challenge.

Personally, I think the information could be rearranged more to fit the reverse pyramid structure, and to move the quotes closer to the beginning of the article. The tweets at the end do fit well where they are, but they feel separate and unincorporated into the story. The information gathered suits the story well.

Overall, a good story.

Week 5 Practical Activity

My mother said today that her children are the most important thing in her life, while my sister said her life revolved around sleeping.

When interviewed for this blog post, my mother, Pauline Cullen,  said that her children are why she works every day.

“I do it so they can go to school, eat dinner, complain about university. I just want them to be happy,” she said.

“I want them to do what they want to do with their lives.”

My sister, Madison Cullen, said sleep was her favourite thing to do.

“When I’m awake, I want to be asleep. When I’m asleep, I want to stay that way,” she said.

“I don’t really want to go to school or work, I just want to take a nap.”

This activity was relatively easy due to knowing the interviewees. They knew what kind of article I had to write and so gave me appropriate responses.

Week 10 Inquiry Activity

The website I like the design of is https://roosterteeth.com.

The text shown is large and easy to read, allowing for easy understanding. Excluding the videos, the only colours used are red black and white. These colours are those used in the logo, associating the whole site with the company. The colour white is evident in the white space too, which spreads out the text and videos so that the home page is not cluttered up. Scrolling down the page, it can be found to be rather balanced. There is almost always something on each half of the screen.

Week 9 Inquiry Activity

The ‘tripadvisor Australia’ web-site seems more appealing to consumers, as it contains only small chunks of wording and also has more white space. The ‘Conde Nast Traveller’ website contains large blocks of text, which quickly bores the eye.

Another point is that ‘tripadvisor Australia’ uses quotes by customers rather than reviewers, meaning the review is more relatable. ‘tripadvisor Australia’ also has a more friendly design, with green trimmings and a slideshow. The ‘Conde Nast Traveller’ Requires the reader to scroll down its white and basic page.

Overall, the ‘tripadvisor Australia’ page is more suited for the average hotel-goer. The ‘Conde Nast Traveller’ is more suited for more logical and higher class hotel-users.

Week 8 Practical Activity

Playfire is a social media site and digital download store for gamers. It is recommendable for those within the gaming community, but not so much for those outside of this loop.

It is specialised to appeal to the gaming community with each ‘buzz’ being about a particular game, allowing the user to clearly identify which game they are describing. The most recent buzzes appear on the home page, making it easy to find what the community is currently talking about.

The site also doubles as a store, where games can be purchased for digital download. Customer reviews are left under each game in the store, allowing judgement on all products. The site thus allows educated purchasing, with frequent deals across all genres.

For gamers concerned about their statistics, Playfire will track them. The site will track all PSN trophies, Xbox Live achievements and Steam achievements in one place. This will be convenient for gamers with more than one gaming console.

The site also offers rewards for the community working together, such as one dollar games. It appears as if the community chooses which game will be awarded by vote. These rewards thus may not to an individual’s liking.

For non-gamers, there does appear to be a limited amount of non-game related buzzes, mostly about what would be classified as ‘geeky’. For example, a user may buzz about a Star Wars themed plane they saw at an airport.

Admittedly, there is little purpose for Playfire if the user is not a gamer. It is a powerful tool to connect to the gaming community if that is what the user wishes to do, but otherwise is not recommendable.

Week 8 Inquiry Activity

Playfire appears to be a very versatile website. Not only is it a social media site, but it also allows the purchasing of new games and offers rewards. There is a constant feed on the main page where users are ‘buzzing’ about a particular game and their experiences and also a blog where articles and competitions are posted.

I would use this personally mostly for the purchase games and give out some occasional advice. I’m not much of a social person, so I wouldn’t do so often, but it does appear as if the site is set up so that limited use of the ‘buzzing’ is more ideal.

Professionally, this site could be used to provide short game reviews and news about game-breaking bugs that have been discovered.
